REPORT
AAS organised a webinar on ataxia - a rare neuromuscular
degenerative condition on 18 December 2021. The webinar was held virtually on zoom
platform.
The introduction of AAS was given by Manan Gupta (AAS
volunteer) through ppt presentation. Then Ms. Archi Gupta (volunteer) gave
introduction of AAS patron Dr. Apoorva Pauranik and AAS president Ms. Swasti
Wagh.
Dr. S.H. Subromony (M.D. neuromuscular Neurology, professor
at University of Florida) was our guest speaker. He shared information about
ataxia, it's different types and recent developments in Ataxia research.
He discussed about genetic and non-genetic causes of ataxia.
He also talked about the genes responsible for most common autosomal recessive
cerebellar ataxia.
We also came to know that ataxia is not a single disease but
a set of problems related to changes in cerebellum. His talk was very
informative.
AAS patron Dr. Apoorva Pauranik gave a detailed summary of
the talk in Hindi. He also emphasized the need of DNA testing, genetic
counselling and importance of promoting Ataxia research in India.
After this, the webinar was followed by the question/answer
session. In this session many patients and health care professionals asked
their queries.
The webinar ended with the vote of thanks by Mrs.Jagruti Upasani (executive member of AAS).
