What is Ataxia?

The literal meaning of the word ataxia is without coordination.

Those affected with this disease have problems related to coordination, as the segments of nervous system controlling the movement and balance are damaged. Ataxia may affect the fingers, hands, arms, legs, body, speech, and eye movements.

The medical history, family history, and a complete neurological evaluation that includes MRI scan of the brain are required for the diagnosis of ataxia. However, the type of ataxia is generally confirmed by DNA test.

Symptoms and time of onset vary according to the type of ataxia. Typically balance and coordination are affected first. Loss of coordination of hands, arms, and legs, and slurring of speech are some common symptoms, which worsens with time and the diseased generally become wheelchair bound.

As far as the cure is concerned, there is no treatment yet for the disease. However, research is going on worldwide and the scientists and researchers are working to figure out a sure shot cure for this degenerative disease.
